BULLDOGS GRAB FIRST D1 WIN, BEAT RICHMOND 2-0

RICHMOND,VA - After dropping the first two games of the season, the Bryant University men's soccer team earned their first win as a Division I program, as they downed the Richmond Spiders  2-0 on Sunday afternoon in their final game of the Nike/Alltel Classic. Senior midfielder Manny Rodriguez (North Branford, Conn.) scored what would prove to be the game winning goal in the 27th minute of play off an assist from his brother, freshman Robb Rodriguez (North Branford, Conn.). Robb Rodriguez recovered a loose ball down the left sideline, and fed the ball across the box to his brother who scored from 10 yards out. The goal would be the only scoring of the first half, as the Bulldogs went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.

Bryant would take a 2-0 lead in the second half when freshman Ben Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) struck for the first goal of his career in the 56th minute of play, when he took a corner kick that deflected in off of a Richmond defender. The Spiders could not find an answer for the Bulldogs, and were blanked by junior keeper Neil Black (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.), who made four stops in net on his way to a shutout and his first career win.

The Bulldogs will try to keep the momentum going off this win as they travel to the University of Pittsburgh on Friday (7 p.m.).
