MEN IN 4TH AFTER DAY 1 OF NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS BEHIND FIRST-PLACE FINISHES FROM FERRIGNO, CIESLEWSKI
BRISTOL, RI -- Backed by a pair of individual event wins from sophomore John Cieslewski (Watertown, Conn.) and junior Tom Ferrigno (West Chester, Pa.), the Bryant University men's swim team sits in fourth place of 14 teams after Friday's Day 1 competition of the New England Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Roger Williams University.
Ferrigno won the 200-yard backstroke Friday evening, breaking a Bryant school record with a time of 1:55.50, while Cieslewski swam to his own first-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke in 27.20 -- also setting a new Bulldog record mark.
Also grabbing a pair of top-5 finishes on the day was freshman Steven Nguyen (San Jose, Calif.). Nguyen placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47-94), an event that saw rookies take the top five spots.
Just five events later, Nguyen made another appearance in the top-5, taking fourth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:03.33.
Bryant's 96 points put them in fourth after Day 1 of the three-day competition that runs from February 22 through February 24. Keene State College sits at No. 1 with 225 points, followed by Bentley College (191), Norwich (105) and Bryant, while host Roger Williams rounds out the top-5 with 91 points.
