BALESTRIERI, RODRIGUEZ, HILL LEAD WAY AT NORTHEAST INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

PROVIDENCE, RI- After a great weekend at the Fairfield Doubles Festival last week, the Bryant University men's tennis team continued its solid play at the Northeast Invitational Tournament held at Brown University over the weekend. Sophomore Cristian Balestrieri (Mar Del Plata, Argentina) finished second playing in second flight singles, losing in the finals to Mark Malloy from Bucknell, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Balistrieri won three straight matches to reach the finals, beating players from Colgate, Brown and Bucknell.
Nicholai Hill (Ottawa, Canada) had an outstanding tournament. Hill, a sophomore, had a tough match against Dan Bednarek from Bucknell in the second round but came out on top in three sets, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. After beating teammate Tom Nowak (Medfield, MA) in the semifinals, Hill went on to win the flight with a 6-3, 6-2 win over John Drosick from Villanova.
Also in singles, Daniel Cournoyer (Jeffeson, Mass.) defeated Dave Isenberg of Brandeis, 6-3, 6-3 and followed wiht a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 win over Army's Andrew Clark in the second round.
Junior Kevin Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga.), also playing in the fifth flight, took fifth place. Playing sixth singles, Orobitg (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) finished in ninth place.
Senior Jose Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru) lost in the semi-finals of flight three falling to Dave Shaheen from Villanova. Rodriguez won a thrilling match in the second round, fighting off Scott Schulman from Brandeis, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.
In doubles action, the combination of Balestrieri and Gardiner lost their first round match to Lehigh, 8-3, in first flight doubles. Balistrieri and Gardiner would go on to win their first round match in the consolation bracket before falling to Dartmouth, 8-5. Nowak and Rodriguez also lost their first round match in second flight doubles to Bucknell, 8-3, followed by a loss to Villanova in the consolation bracket, 8-6.
In third flight action, Andres Orobitg and Daniel Cournoyer (Jeffeson, Mass.) won their first round match over Villanova, 8-3, before losing to FDU 8-4, and then to Brandeis in the consolation bracket 8-6. Nicholai Hill and Mat Shephard-Lupo had the most success in doubles play, as they took fifth place in third flight doubles after beating Brandeis, 8-6.
Bryant will next compete at the UConn Invitational this weeked.
