MEN’S TENNIS DROPS 5-4 DECISION AT BRANDEIS THURSDAY

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Playing under Division III rules due to the location of the match, the Bryant University men’s tennis team fell behind 4-0 at Brandeis Thursday afternoon, but rallied back to knot things up at four apiece before dropping the final singles match in three sets.

Due to DIII rules each doubles match counted as one point on Thursday afternoon in Waltham, Mass. as the Bulldogs (6-10) quickly fell behind 3-0.

Brandeis (8-6) jumped out to the early lead when Simon Miller and Nick White defeated Bryant’s Juan-Martin Paredes (Quito, Ecuador) and Thomas Nowak (Medfield, Mass.) in No. 1 doubles.

The Judges went on to shutout Cristian Balestrieri (Mar Del Plata, Argentina) and Andres Orobitg (Guaynabo,Puerto Rico) to go up 2-0 and defeated junior Nicholai Hill (Ottawa, Ontario) and sophomore Daniel Cournoyer (Jefferson, Mass.) by a margin of 9-7 to sweep the doubles matchups. It was Balestrieri’s and Orobitg’s first loss as a duo at they dropped to 9-0 as a team.

The hole got a little deeper for the Bulldogs as they lost the opening singles matchup in the No. 5 slot. Fred Rozenshteyn of Brandeis defeated Nowak 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets to give the Judges a 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would not back down easily as they took four straight matchups to level the overall score at four apiece.

Orobitg and Balestrieri each won their matchups in straight sets, while Hill defeated Dave Yovanoff 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. In the No. 2 position, Paredes dropped the first set 6-2, but battled back to win the last two sets, 6-1 and 6-4.

With the score level and the last singles match underway in the No. 3 spot, Steven Milo of Brandeis and Bryant’s Kevin Gardiner battled into three sets. Gardiner took the first set 6-4 but lost the second 7-5. Running out of steam late, Gardiner was defeated in the last three games of the final set to drop the matchup 6-3 and give the Judges their eighth victory of the season.

The Black and Gold return to action on Saturday, April 10th when they host Holy Cross at 2 p.m. at the Bryant Tennis Courts. The women’s team will be hosting Navy at 11 a.m. on Saturday as well.
