GENERAL GENDRON’S BOYS COME THROUGH WITH WIN OVER GMU

Cristian Balestrieri was a winner at No. 1 singles against George Mason Tuesday.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The combination of clay courts and spring-like temperatures has proven to be a great combination as the energetic Bryant University men’s tennis team upended George Mason 6-1 Tuesday.  The Bulldogs pulled out three, third-set tiebreakers to earn the win, including a big 8-7 win at No. 1 doubles by Juan Paredes and Nicholai Hill to give Bryant the doubles point to open the match.

Cristian Balestrieri, playing at No. 1 singles, cruised to a straight-set win over the powerful Jorge Osuna, 6-3, 6-3 while Paredes, the South American clay court master, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Kevin McMillan at No. 2 singles.  Kevin Gardiner fought through a tough win over Pat Mulquin at No. 3.  Gardiner won the opener 6-4 but fell 6-2 in the second and hung on to win 10-8 in the tiebreaker.

Senior Tom Nowak also battled hard and was able to grind out a win over Arjun Sanghui, 7-5, 2-6 (10-4), fighting through broken strings and fatigue.

“We played great today,” said a beaming coach Ron Gendron after the match. “They battled hard in the heat of South Carolina and came through with a big win and the guys are hungry for more.”
