SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Participating in two different tournaments over the weekend, the Bryant University men's tennis team took another big step forward with solid showings at both the UConn and Bryant Invitationals, respectively.
In Storrs, Conn., freshman Joe Sterrey (Newnan, Ga.) earned his first-ever flight title in the no. 8 singles draw. On his way to the title match, Sterrey topped Sacred Heart's James Cusano, 6-0, 6-0, and Quinnipiac's Ben Teicher, 6-2, 6-2. In the finals vs. Josh Palmer of UConn, Sterrey earned a 6-4 win in the first set before Palmer evened the score with a win in set two. Finding himself down 6-0 in the final set, Sterrey rattled off 10-straight points to win the set, and ultimately the flight title.
At the Bryant Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, senior captain Dana Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C.) closed out the month of September on a winning note with a pair of victories at no. 1 singles. Parziale topped RPI's no. 1 Matt LaBarre, 6-2, 6-4, before beating Jonathan Sokolsky of Conn. College in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The Bulldogs finished their annual tourney with an 18-3 overall mark with 2-0 weekends from junior captain Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua), sophomore Max Vogt (Fair Oaks, Calif.) and freshman Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.).
The action doesn't slow down for Bryant as they prepare for the Quinnipiac Invitational this weekend, as well as a dual match against Holy Cross on Saturday in Smithfield.
