SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Coming off a huge win over Northeast Conference rival Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, senior Dana Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C.) and freshman Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) of the Bryant University men's tennis team swept the NEC men's tennis weekly awards, announced the conference Tuesday afternoon.
Parziale walks away with his second NEC Player of the Week honor to go along with his three NEC Player of the Month accolades from the fall. In Bryant's 4-1 victory over two-time defending NEC champion Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, senior captain scored one of the biggest wins of his career with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8) triumph over Arvis Berzins, the two-time NEC Player of the Year. The loss also marks Berzins first career defeat against an NEC opponent. Parziale also knocked off UConn's Wayne Harrell, 6-3, 6-3, last Wednesday in the Bulldogs' 8-5 win over their New England rival. The senior has amassed a league-high 22 singles victories on the year, including 11 at the #1 flight. Parziale has also posted an 18-8 mark in doubles competition.
Welsh, a two-time NEC Rookie of the Month last fall, helped spark Bryant to a 4-1 win over reigning NEC champion Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. He first teamed with classmate John Templemen (Midland, Mich.) for an 8-6 win at #3 doubles, then secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory at #3 singles. Earlier in the week, Welsh posted a 7-6, 6-1 win as the Bulldogs downed UConn, 8-5, in Storrs. Welsh leads all NEC rookies with 16 singles victories and has improved to 7-4 in #3 flight play.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs have just two matches (Wednesday at Brandeis, Saturday vs. Sacred Heart) and nine days before opening NEC Championship action on Thursday, April 17.
