Former UMass Standout Named Graduate Assistant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. ? The Bryant University department of athletics has announced the hiring as Teri Rooney as graduate assistant softball coach. The announcement was made today by Athletic Director Dan Gavitt and head coach Lisa-Ann Wallace.

A 2002 graduate of the University Massachusetts-Amherst, Rooney was a three-time all-conference selection and the Atlantic-10 Conference Player of the Year in 2002. A career .335 hitter with 128 RBIs and 29 stolen bases, she was an NCAA All-Region selection in 1999 and 2002 and earned New England All-Region honors all four years.

A native of Visalia, Calif., Rooney holds the UMass school record for hits in a season (77) and at bats in a season (206). In 2002, she was ranked 12th nationally in Division I for triples with seven. That same year, Rooney was also named First Team Verizon Academic All-American.

The Bryant University softball team is coming off its most successful season in the spring of 2004. The Bulldogs went 26-17 and advanced to their first NCAA championship tournament
