BRYANT SOFTBALL SELECTED AS HOST OF NCAA NORTHEAST
REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THIS WEEK
Eight-Team Tournament Starts Thursday at
Bryant
SMITHFIELD, RI --- The NCAA Division II Softball Committee has selected the 64 teams that will participate in the 2006 NCAA Division II Softball Regional Championships. Eight teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in double-elimination tournaments to determine the final eight championship participants. Regional competition will be held May 11-15. Winners will advance to the finals to be held May 18-22, at the James I. Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, Virginia.
Bryant (29-16), champions of the Northeast-10
Conference for the second-straight season, will make its third
consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament after winning the
conference championship in thrilling fashion Sunday. The
Bulldogs knocked off Southern Connecticut in an elimination game
and followed with two wins over UMass Lowell to win the
title. This will be Bryant's second time serving as host of
the tournament as the Bulldogs hosted the 2004 NCAA Regional
Championship at the Bryant Softball Complex.
Bryant, the third seed of the regional, is one of four teams selected to this week's tournament from the Northeast-10 Conference, joining fifth seed UMass Lowell (31-20), seventh seed Le Moyne (29-19), and eighth seed Southern New Hampshire (21-21). C.W. Post (42-10) and Adelphi (31-16) of the NYCAC Conference are seeded No. 1 and No. 2 respectively while fellow NYCAC member Queens (NY) (27-20) is the No. 6 seed.
Caldwell College (36-15) is the lone representative from the CACC Conference.
The Cougars won the regional title the last time it was played at Bryant in 2004, defeating Merrimack 3-2 in nine innings in the final. At last year's regional championship in Syracuse, NY, host Le Moyne College won the title with a 3-1 win over C.W. Post in the final.
