BRYANT DEFEATS LE MOYNE 5-0 IN FIRST ROUND OF NE-10 TOURNEY

SMITHFIELD, RI - Bryant junior shortstop Amanda Gagne went 2 for 4 with three RBIs while sophomore Janine Enos (Wareham, Mass.) pitched a complete-game 3-hitter as the Bryant softball team, seeded No. 1,  opened the Northeast-10 Conference tournament with a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded Le Moyne Friday afternoon at the Bryant Softball Complex.

The Bulldogs will advance in the winners bracket where they will face UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.  Le Moyne, which defeated Assumption 2-0 in the opener, will meet Southern New Hampshire in an elimination game Saturday at noon. That game will be played at Brown University in Providence.

Bryant, the Northeast-10 Conference regular season champion and defending conference tournament champion, got on the board early as Gagne belted a double to left and came home to score when senior Jordan Dargon (Trumbull, Conn.) hit a double to the fence in left field to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

In the second, it was Gagne once again drilling a bases loaded double to left to put Bryant on top 4-0.  For Enos, the runs were all she needed to collect her 12th win of the season.

Le Moyne's Lindsay Spaziani (Horseheads, NY) led off the game with a single up the middle off Enos.  Lyndsey Balinskas (Edison, NJ) would follow with a walk, but Enos would settle down from there.  After retiring the next three batters to end the inning,  Enos would retire the next eight batters before giving up a single to Balinskas in the third.  From there, Le Moyne could only manage a sixth inning double by Kristin DesLauriers (Liverpool, NY) as the Bulldogs would hold on for the win.

GAME 1 - #4 Le Moyne 2, #5 Assumption 0

SMITHFIELD, RI - Le Moyne sophomore pitcher Sarah Reed (De Witt, NY) pitched a complete-game two-hitter in leading the fourth-seeded Dolphins to a 2-0 win over number five seed Assumption College in first round action of the 2006 Northeast-10 Conference Softball Tournament Friday at Bryant University.

Reed fanned eight Assumption batters in the game and took a one hitter into the sixth inning allowing only a third inning leadoff double to Amanda Monge (Reading, Mass.). The double would not effect Reed as she proceeded to strike out the next Assumption batters.

Le Moyne (28-17) would get all the runs they would need in the bottom of the fourth as Melissa Quimby (Baldwinsville, NY) led off with a single and was followed by a single from Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, NY).  Reed would help her own cause by lining a single to right to score Quimby from second.  Emma Murphy would follow Reed with an RBI groundout to shortstop scoring DesLauriers from third.

Ashley Anderson (Liverpool, NY) had two of Le Moyne's seven hits on the afternoon.  Assumption (30-19) will face the loser of today's Southern Connecticut - U Mass Lowell game on Saturday.

Bettencourt lined a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth, but Dempsey got the next two batters to pop up to end the threat.  The Penmen has runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but once again Dempsey forced the next two batters to pop up to secure the win.
