#2 Pioneers Jump On #6 Bryant Early, Cruise to 5-1 Win in NCAA Regionals
May 11, 2007
BROOKVILLE, NY - C.W. Post's powerful offense grabbed the lead early, and pitcher Samantha Yodowitz shut down the Bulldogs to give the Pioneers a 5-1 win Friday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament's Northeast Regional.
The Pioneers jumped on Bryant starter Janine Enos (Wareham, Mass) early, when Melissa Hippo smacked a two-run home run to left center.
Two innings later, Hippo would single in another run before Christie Softy drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.
Enos was in trouble all day, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings. After Kelsey Dooley knocked in Post's fifth run of the game, Enos was pulled in favor of senior Nikki Ingalls (Westford, Mass.).
Ingalls was able to settle down the Pioneer offense, but Yodowitz stifled the Bulldog bats all game, going all seven, and only allowing one run on five hits.
Senior Amanda Wilbur (Lakeville, Mass.) was the only Bulldog with much success against Yodowitz. The centerfielder went 2 for 3 with a double.
The Bulldogs managed to push across a run in the seventh on a Kate Thomas (Bedford, NH) double. However, Yodowitz was able to get out of the two on, two out jam by striking out Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY) looking in a 14 pitch at-bat.
With the loss, the Bulldogs move to within one loss of elimination. The Bulldogs will face #4 seed Adelphi Saturday morning at 11:30am. The winner of that game will continue play Saturday afternoon while the loser will head home.
C.W. Post moves to the championship game of the winner's bracket and will face #8 UMass-Lowell, who eliminated top-seed Le Moyne earlier Friday.
