BULLDOGS TO OPEN PLAY WEDNESDAY AT C.W. POST WITH 9AM TILT WITH ADELPHI
May 5, 2008
Smithifield, RI - Off a run to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title game, the Bulldogs will return to the NCAA Tournament's Northeast Regional for the fifth time in as many years. The Bulldogs were awarded the #6 seed in the region and will open play Wednesday with a 9am game with Adelphi.
The Bulldogs and Panthers played a doubleheader in Garden City, NY earlier this season, splitting two games. 2008 NE-10 Pitcher of the Year Janine Enos (Wareham, Mass.) shut down Panthers on just 3 hits in seven innings. Senior Jennifer Serrano (Stoneham, Mass.) was 3-4 with a run scored and Kate Thomas (Bedford, NH) drove in two runs. Adelphi edged the Bulldogs in eight innings in the other game, with ace pitcher Julie Schaper shutting down the Bulldogs for eight innings before the Panther offense broke through against freshman starter Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, PA) in the bottom of the eighth to win 1-0.
The Panthers finished the year 40-19 and lossed a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to #1 seed C.W. Post 2-1 in the ECC Tournament finals. Adelphi is led by Katie Brophy, who hit .440 with 32 RBI. THe powerful Panthers hit a total of 27 home runs this year and Dely Francisco provided plenty of speed on the bases, stealing 50 bases on the year. Schaper was a dominant 22-4 with a 1.36 ERA in the circle.
The Panthers and Bulldogs met in last year's NCAAs at C.W. Post and the Bulldogs eliminated the Panthers in a 5-2 game that was powered by two home runs by last year's player of the year Amanda Wilbur and one by Serrano. The Bulldogs were also seeded sixth in last year's tournament, while Adelphi was the #4.
If the Bulldogs win, they will play Thursday at 2pm against the winner of #2 Le Moyne vs. #7 New York Tech. With a loss, the team would move to losers bracket against the loser of that same game 9am Thursday morning.
