SMITHFIELD, RI - Following two straight weeks of postponing the start of the Bryant University Track & Field season due to rainy weather, the clouds gave way to warm sunshine as the Bulldogs opened the 2005 outdoor season at the annual Bryant Invitational here Saturday. The Bryant men made the best of the spring opener, taking first place overall in the team scoring with 122.5 points while the Bulldog women were fourth with 76 total team points.
Leading the way for the men's team was North Attleboro's Hafiz Greigre who captured first place in the men's 100 meters in 11.12 seconds and later took second in the men's 200 meters in 21.98. Jared Nelson of Cranston, R.I. set the tone early for the men with a strong sixth-place finish in the men's 10,000 meters in the first running event of the day. Nelson crossed the line in 35:40.05.
Steve Barone and Dan Giacalone took second and third respectively in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase behind overall winner, James Beaubrun of New Haven. The Bryant men's 4 x 100 meter relay team took first in 43.31, just edging Eastern Connecticut's squad that finished in 43.58. The Bulldogs also took first in the 4 x 400 meter relay to close the meet in 3:27.52.
In the field events, Dallas Lynch took first in the triple jump by clearing 43 feet, eight inches while Jonathan Richards was 6th with a mark of 38-7. Mike Nessralla took top honors in the men's discus throw at 142 feet, three inches.
On the women's side, the Bulldogs got a strong performance on the day from Michelle Morris who took second in the women's 100 meters in 12.99 seconds. Jen Goodwin ran a strong race in the 10,000 meters, taking third in 42:31.90 while teammate Nicole Radzik was first in the women's 3,000 meter steeple chase in a time of 12:35.09.
Samantha Genatossio had a busy day of competing in the women's hurdles as well as the jumps. Genatossio took fifth in the long jump by clearing 15 feet, four inches and came back later in the day to take third in the triple jump with a mark of 32-10.
Also faring well in the field events was Amber Torrey who was third in the shot put (37.2.25) and a second place finish in the hammer throw at 145 feet, 4 inches. She would close out the meet with a third-place finish in the discus throw at 107 feet, eight inches.
