Cegarra Leads Bulldogs at NE-10 Championships

NEW HAVEN, CONN.  – Freshman Rob Coates, selected as the meet’s outstanding athlete, won two events to lead Southern Connecticut State University to the men’s championship at the Northeast-10 Conference indoor track and field championships Friday night at Moore Fieldhouse.
Southern’s men scored 213 points to edge second-place UMass Lowell, which scored 205 points.  Stonehill was third with 85; Bentley fourth with 39; Bryant placed fifth with 34; and Assumption was sixth with 12 points.
        Ashley Moulton of the University of Massachusetts Lowell earned outstanding athlete honors in leading the River Hawks to the women’s team title.
        The River Hawks amassed 247 points to easily outdistance second-place Stonehill, which scored 136 points.  Southern was third with 94; Bryant was fourth with 63; Bentley placed fifth with 36; and Assumption was sixth with 28.
        Other award winners for the men were Clint Cooper of UMass Lowell, athlete of the year; River Hawks’ coach Gary Gardner was named coach of the year; and Stonehill freshman Keith Gill was named freshman of the year.
        For the women, UMass Lowell swept the honors with Moulton selected as athlete of the year; Gardner was named coach of the year; and Tristin Johnson was selected as freshman of the year.
       Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Jessica Cegarra who successfully defended her Northeast-10 Indoor shot put title with a throw of 40 feet, five inches.  Cegarra also ran a leg on the 4x400 meter relay team that finished fourth in a school record time of 4:26.17.  Amber Torrey was second in the women's weight throw with a mark of 44-10.5 while Mary Sanker set a new personal-best mark in the pole vault, finishing first by clearing eight feet. 
      Holly Resendes of Warwick took second place honors in the women's 5,000 meters. The senior finished in a time of 18:39.46.  
      On the men's side, Hafiz Griegre took first place honors in the men's 200 meters in a time of 22.41 seconds.  The sophomore placed seventh in the prelims of the 55 meters in 6.64 but teammate Daniel Kwarteng took fourth to advance to the finals where the Worcester, Mass. native placed fourth in 6.60. 
      Kwarteng also would take fourth-place honors in the men's long jump, clearing 21 feet, 8.75 inches. Dallas Lynch of Wayne, N.J. was sixth in the triple jump at 42 feet, four inches.
