HANOVER, NH - Dartmouth College was the site of outstanding track and field performances by the Bryant men's and women's teams as the Bulldogs recently completed competition at the 2007 New England Championships. The Bryant men finished seventh overall with 38 points while the women earned 14 points to place 20th.
The Bulldogs were led by sprinter Hafiz Greigre who finished the meet as the New England Champion in the 400 meters, finishing in a time of 46.37 seconds. Greigre also placed 2nd in the men's 200 meters, equaling the meet record with a time of 21.09 seconds. URI's Ashad Agyapong was first with a meet record time of 20.68. The speedster is Bryant's first-ever New England Champion. Last week, Greigre captured the Northeast-10 Conference title in the 100m and 200m.
Alex Engel ran a strong race, finishing with a personal-best mark of 49.06 seconds. Joe Brennan, a senior from East Providence competing for the final time as a Bulldog, turned in a strong performance in his main event, finishing fifth with his personal best time of 49.27. Brennan earns All-New England honors for his top-eight finish.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Zach Perron took 23rd with a time of 58.16 seconds while Rob Schneider cleared 14 feet, 2.75 inches to finish 11th.
The men's 4x400 meter relay squad earned All-New England status with a fourth-place finish in 3:17.65 while the men's 4x100 meter relay team blew away the school record, something that has seemed like a weekly occurance for this group as Lorenzo Perry, Engel, Brennan, and Greigre cruised in with a time of 41.75 seconds to place fourth and earn all-New England honors.
Perry, a senior, just missed earning all-New England honors in the 100 meters with an 11th-place finish in 11.22 seconds.
On the women's side, senior Natasha Stevenson had a fine championship, finishing third in the women's 100 meters in 12.43 seconds and also adding a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters in 25.28. Stevenson was sixth in the prelims of the 200m in 25.68 but turned things up for the finals of the event. The same in the 100 meters where she was fifth in the 100 meters in 12.73 seconds and bettered that time by two / tenths of a second in the final.
Freshman Stephanie Montagano placed ninth in the 400 meters in 59.09 while distance standouts Nicole Radzik and Jennifer Goodwin were 10th and 23rd respectively in the 10,000 meters. Radzik finished in 39 minutes, 52.48 seconds while Goodwin crossed in 42:00.57.
Sophomore Rachel Martinich, Bryant's record holder in the javelin, placed seventh in the women's javelin with a best mark of 118 feet, 11 inches.
Senior Jessica Cegarra, a standout three-sport athlete at Bryant, capped off her tremendous track career (indoor and outdoor school record holder in the shot put) by earning all-New England honors in the shot put this weekend with an eighth-place finish at 40 feet, 5 inches, while also taking 18th in the javelin throw (99-9).
Congratulations to coach Trish Hillery and
Assistant Rick Brown and especially to the
Bulldogs for their best finish ever at the New England
Championships. Greigre will next continue his remarkable
season at the NCAA Division II Championships.
