TRACK AND FIELD COMPETES AT STONEHILL COLLEGE; RADZIK PROVISIONALLY QUALIFIES FOR NCAAS WITH STEEPLECHASE WIN

SENIOR NICOLE RADZIK

EASTON, Mass. -- The Bryant University men's and women's track and field teams took seventh and sixth place, respectively, at this weekend's Stonehill Skyhawk Track and Field Invitational, April 5.

Four athletes on the women's side highlighted the day-long competition, as a pair of runners and a pair from the field events walked away with first-place finishes.

Those four were led by senior Nicole Radzik (Sutton, Mass.), who bested Stonehill's Jen Gardynski by more than 13 seconds for a top time and new Bryant record in the 3000-meter steeplechase (11:18.16). Her time also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships.

Other top finishers were Stephanie Montagano (Wakefield, Mass.), who won the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.27, senior Amber Torrey (Plainfield, NH), who took first in the hammer throw (37.29), and junior Rachel Martinich (Fairfield, Conn.), who's throw of 36.47 won the javelin throw.

Martinich and Torrey also placed in the top-10 in the shot put, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. In Montagano's other events, the junior finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.25) as well as leading off Bryant's third-place 4x100-meter relay.

Top-10 finishes from: Casey Fenwich (1500-meter run; #10 - 5:06.36), Stephanie Kirk (100-meter hurdles; #10 - 17.34), Liane Grieg (400-meter hurdles; #7 - 1:11.13), Samatha Genatossio (triple jump; #4 - 10.02m and long jump; #10 - 4.51m), Abigail Petersen (pole vault; #3 - 3.05m) and Mary Sanker (pole vault; #9 - 2.45m) also helped the Bulldog women to their sixth-place team finish with 67 points.

On the men's side, a pair of top-3 finishes from freshman Thomas O'Connor (Westwood, Mass.) led the Bulldogs to a seventh-place finish of their own.

O'Connor took second in the 200-meter dash (22.16) and third in the 100-meter dash (11.11) to set the tone early on, and was joined in top-3 finishes by the pair of Peter Gooding (North Easton, Mass.) and Michael Hull (East Hampton, Conn.), who took second and third, respectively, in the javelin throw.

Junior Steve Haskell (East Bridgewater, Mass.) also left his mark on the competition, taking a fourth-place finish in the shot put (13.01m) and a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw (38.97m) away from the meet.

Other top-10 finishes from the Bulldog men included: Tom Casey, Dan Gehen and Eric Haywood, who went No. 7, No. 8 and No. 10 in the 5000-meter run, Andrew Fitzgerald and Michale DiBella, who took sixth and tenth in the 400-meter hurdles, and Justin Hoffner, who took ninth in the long jump.

The men finished seventh of 12 in the Skyhawk Invitational with 49 team points.

Both teams compete again this weekend, travelling to Lowell, Mass. for the George Davis Invitational, April 12.
