FULL RESULTS

EASTON, MA – The Bryant University men’s and women’s track & field teams continued their excellent season with another solid all-around performance by both the men’s and women’s track & field teams Saturday at the Skyhawk Invitational hosted by Stonehill College.

Competing against the top teams in the Northeast in the first scoring meet of the outdoor season, the Bryant men placed third overall out of 12 teams competing while the women were 10th out of 14 teams.

Alex Engel and the Bryant Track & Field Teams had one of their best meets of the spring Saturday at Stonehill College.

The Bulldogs were led by junior standout Alex Engel (Spencer, MA) and sophomore star Thomas O’Connor (Westwood, MA) as the pair has an exceptional afternoon in both the sprints and relays for Bryant.  Engel had a fantastic day in both the 400 meters and in the relays.  Engel finished second in the fastest section of the 400 meters in 50.10 seconds earning eight points for the Bulldogs.

Teammate Mike DiBella (Upper Saddle River, NJ) was fourth in the section and fourth overall with a time of 50.69 seconds.

In the sprints, O’Connor showed why he is one of the best sprinters as he turned in the team’s best time in the 100 meters this spring with a strong second-place finish in the 100m in 11.12 seconds.  Stonehill’s Torrey Price was the overall winner in 10.99 seconds.  Justin Hoffner (Oxford, CT) was third in his second and eighth overall with a time of 12.01 seconds.

O’Connor would not be denied however in the 200 meters as the sophomore easily turned in the team’s best 200 meter time this spring with a first place finish in 22.60 seconds, edging Wheaton’s Merzudin Ibric at the wire by just .02 seconds.

In the women’s 1500 meters, Kat Ragone (Bourne, MA) finished 11th in the fastest section in 5:07.85 while teammate Casey Fenwick (Wayland, MA) was right behind in 12th place in the same section in 5:08.30.

On the women’s side, Stephanie Kirk (Pompton Lakes, NJ) was first in the third section of the 100m hurdles in a time of 17 minutes, 47 seconds.   Liane Grieg (York, ME) was second in her section and ninth overall in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 1:13.33.

In the women’s 400 meters, Justine Douvadjian (Andover, MA) ran well in section two, finishing sixth overall in 1:04.19 while teammate Katie Pelletier (Berwick, ME) was fourth in the third section in 1:06.63.

In the sprints, Sherika Nicholas (East Patchogue, NY) took second in the fourth section of the 100 meters, finishing in 13.73 seconds.  Nicholas would later take first in the fifth section of the 200 meters in 28.95 seconds with teammate Kim Warner (Shrewsbury, MA) next at 29.08.

Jennifer Denise (East Patchogue, NY) was ninth in the third section of the 800 metes in a time of 2:41.94.

Mark Kenwood (Cumberland, RI) ran a very strong time in the men’s 10,000 meters, finishing in 33:16.81 to place fourth.

In the relays, the men’s 4x400 continued its pursuit of the school record as the amazing quartet of Engel, O’Connor, DiBella, and Andrew Fitzgerald  (New Hartford, CT) cruised home to a first-place finish in a time of 3:26.67, just three seconds off of the school mark of 3:23.74.  Saturday’s first-place finish was nearly a full four seconds better than second-place Mass-Lowell.

The women’s 4x400 relay placed fifth overall in 4:26.01 while both the men’s and women’s 4x100 were fourth respectively.  Bryant’s 4x800 meter relay teams competed for the first time this outdoor season with the women’s team finishing 10th in 10:53.19 but the men’s 4x800 showed little rust the team of John Mitton (North Reading, MA), Drew Clark (Hopkinson, MA), Ryan Busby (Derry, NH) and Ben Coughlin (Worcester, MA) finished second in 8:18.51, just shy of the school record of 8:17.99.  All three are freshmen with the exception of Coughlin who is a sophomore.

In the field events, Hoffner brought home five points with a strong best jump of 21 feet, 3.50 inches, the best of the season by the Bulldogs, to finish fourth. Fitzgerald was eighth with a leap of 20-1.75 while Conor Richardson (North Attleboro, MA) and Chris Brida (Southampton, MA) were 14th and 16th respectively.

In the throws, senior Steve Haskell (East Bridgewater, MA) finished sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 138 feet, 8 inches to score three points and later placed seventh in the men’s shot put with a season-best mark of 42 feet, 6.26 inches earning two team points.  Teammate Greg Brown (Methuen, MA) was 10th in the shot put at 40-9.

The Bryant men’s and women’s track & field teams will return to action next weekend competing at the Brown Invitational.
