INDOOR TRACK 800M RECORD FALLS AT NEW ENGLANDS

INDOOR TRACK OFF TO STRONG START AT NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
BOSTON - Freshman John Mitton (North Reading, MA) broke Bryant's eight-year old 800 meter record at the New England Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday evening at Boston University. The New England's conclude Saturday.
Mitton shattered Darrin Smith's mark of 1:56.74 set in 2000 with a time of 1:55.72 Friday, placing 21st in the event.
Junior Alex Engel (Spencer, MA) and sophomore Tom O'Connor (Westwood, MA) qualified for finals in their respective events Friday. O'Connor placed fourth in the 200 meter prelims witha qualifying time of 21.94 seconds while Engel also placed fourth in the men's 400 meter prelims in 48.84 seconds.
Also running Friday were Mike DiBella (Upper Saddle River, NJ) who placed 11th overall in the prelims of the 500 meters, just missing a spot in the finals with a time of 1:05.47. Justin Getts (Beacon Falls, CT) placed 30th in the 800 meters in 1:58.49. Senior Tom Casey (Cornwall, NY) was 23rd overall in the 5000 meters in a time of 15:30.91.
In the 55 meter hurdles, Anthony Monteiro, a freshman from Leominster, MA also just missed a spot in the finals with a 17th place finish in the prelims in a time of 8.17 seconds. Senior Zach Perron (Windham, NH) was 22nd in 8.34.
Steve Haskell (East Bridgewater, MA) was 21st in the men's weight throw with a best mark of 43 feet, 7.75 inches.
On the women's side, Justine Douvadjian (Andover, MA) just missed the school record in the women's 500 meters. In addition to Engel and O'Connor, Drew Clark (Hopkinton, MA) will compete Saturday in the men's mile.
