O'CONNOR PLACES FOURTH AT NEW ENGLAND'S IN 200M; ANOTHER RECORD FALLS ON SECOND DAY OF ACTION

John Mitton broke Bryant's 800m indoor record at the New England Championships at BU Saturday.

BOSTON, MA - The Bryant University indoor track & field team capped a successful New England Championships Saturday with both Tom O'Connor (Westwood, MA) and Alex Engel (Spencer, MA) advancing to the finals on Saturday and Drew Clark (Hopkinton, MA) setting a new school record in the men's mile Saturday at Boston University's track.

O'Connor placed fourth in the 200 meter prelims with a qualifying time of 21.94 seconds Friday afternoon.  On Saturday, the sophomore finished fourth in the finals in a time of 22.13 seconds. 

Engel also placed fourth in the men's 400 meter prelims in 48.84 seconds Friday and finished 10th in the 400m final Saturday in 50.31 seconds. 

Clark, a freshman competing in his first New England Championship, set a new school record in the men's mile, finishing 20th overall in a time of 4:16.83, eclipsing Jason Eddy's previous record of 4:17.63 set in 2002.

The Bulldogs concluded the New England Championship with a seventh-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with Mike DiBella (Upper Saddle River, NJ), Andrew Fitzgerald (New Hartford, CT), O'Connor and Engel crossing the line in 3:18.85.  It was the relay's best time this season and narrowly missed the school record of 3:18.49 of which Engel helped set in 2007.

On the first day of the championships Friday, freshman John Mitton (North Reading, MA) broke Bryant's eight-year old 800 meter record, shattering Darrin Smith's mark of 1:56.74 set in 2000 with a time of 1:55.72 to place 21st in the event. 

Also running Friday were Mike DiBella who placed 11th overall in the prelims of the 500 meters, just missing a spot in the finals with a time of 1:05.47.  Justin Getts (Beacon Falls, CT) placed 30th in the 800 meters in 1:58.49.  Senior Tom Casey (Cornwall, NY) was 23rd overall in the 5000 meters in a time of 15:30.91. 

In the 55 meter hurdles, Anthony Monteiro, a freshman from Leominster, MA also just missed a spot in the finals with a 17th place finish in the prelims in a time of 8.17 seconds.  Senior Zach Perron (Windham, NH) was 22nd in 8.34. 

Steve Haskell (East Bridgewater, MA) was 21st in the men's weight throw with a best mark of 43 feet, 7.75 inches.

On the women's side, Justine Douvadjian (Andover, MA) just missed the school record in the women's 500 meters.  In addition to Engel and O'Connor, Drew Clark (Hopkinton, MA) will compete Saturday in the men's mile.

The Bulldogs will travel to the ECAC/IC4A Championship at Reggie Lewis in Boston March 7-8.
