DEDHAM, MA – Spring was certainly in the air Saturday as the Bryant University men’s and women’s track & field teams opened their outdoor season at the all-day Husky Invitational hosted by Northeastern University.  Following a record-breaking indoor season, the Bulldogs wasted little time setting another school mark in the first outdoor meet of the season.

“The outdoor season got off to a great start despite many of our athletes resting this weekend following the indoor season,” said head coach Stephanie Reilly.

Senior Tom Casey (Cornwall, NY) broke Eric Narcisi’s eight-year old school record in the 10,000 with a sixth-place finish Saturday.  Casey finished in a time of 32 minutes, 39.47 seconds, passing Narcisi’s mark of 32:42.8 set in 2001.

Freshman Ryan Busby (Derry, NH) looked sharp in his first collegiate outdoor meet taking sixth-place overall in the men’s 1,500 meters in a time of 4:13.05.   The Pinkerton High School graduate was just five seconds behind overall winner Chris O’Day of Assumption.

Teammate Scott Twardowski (Rehoboth, MA) placed 18th in the event with a time of 4:19.10 while Ben Coughlin (Worcester, MA) was 20th and Chris Kelleher (Ellington, CT) was not far behind in 22nd.

Anthony Monteiro (Leominster, MA)
looked strong running in both hurdle events.  The freshman placed fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.25 and later took fourth in the 400m hurdles in 58.33.  Zach Perron (Windham, NH), a senior, was eighth in both events as well.

In the field events, Chris Brida (Southampton, MA), another talented freshman on this year’s team, placed fifth in the men’s long jump, clearing 19 feet, 8.75 inches.  Teammate Justin Hoffner (Oxford, CT) was seventh (19-03.50).  Brida would finish fourth in the triple jump with a day’s best jump of 41 feet, 10 inches.  Earlier in the meet, Hoffner took 12th in the 100 meter dash in 12.02 seconds.

Steve Haskell (East Bridgewater, MA) earned a top-10 finish in the men’s hammer throw with a best mark of 138-06 to place 10th.

On the women’s side, Casey Fenwick (Wayland, MA) had an excellent day. The senior placed third overall in the women’s 5,000 meters in a very good time of 19:13.63.  Freshmen Katelyn Arouca (Hanson, MA) and Marissa Donovan (Belmont, NH) were 9th and 10th respectively.

In the 400 meters, freshman Katie Pelletier (Berwick, ME) and senior Justine Douvadjian (Andover, MA) looked sharp.  Pelletier placed fourth in a time of 1:03.74 while Douvadjian was a second behind in fifth in 1:04.28.

In the sprints, Bryant was well represented in the 100 meter dash led by Sherika Nicholas (East Patchogue, NY) who took 16th in 14.32 seconds.  Amanda Early (Haverhill, MA), a junior was 18th in 14.43 while freshman Joanna Chanaj (Peabody, MA) was 22nd in 14.60.

Chanaj would later place an impressive second in the women’s high jump, clearing 4-feet, 11.75 inches.

“We had an excellent day all around, highlighted by a school record and massive personal-best in the 10k for Tom Casey and great performances by Casey Fenwick in the 5k running plus a lifetime-best with her third place finish and Joanna Chanaj taking second in the HJ.”

The men’s and women’s track & field teams will return to action next Saturday (Mar. 28) hosting the annual Bryant Invitational.  Every track team from the state of Rhode Island including Providence College will be competing in the meet.
