INDOOR TRACK OPENS STRONG AT NEW ENGLANDS; ENGEL BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 400 METER

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD AT NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP

BOSTON - The Bryant University indoor track & field teams
kicked off the 2010 New England Championships in fine fashion
Friday evening at Boston University. Alex Engel (Spencer,
Mass.) turned in the best performance of the opening day
with a second-place finish in the prelims of the 400 meters and
followed it up on Saturday with a second-place finish in the final
of the event turning in a time of 48.09, breaking the school record
of 48.23. The men finished with 13 points overall and in 20th
place.
Lined up with competitors from the Big East and Atlantic-10 among others in his heat, the Bulldog senior won the heat with a time of 48.55 on Friday and followed it up with a second-place finish on Saturday. Engel posted his fastest time of the season and broke the school record of 48.23. Rhode Island's David Kennedy won the event with a 47.32.
On Saturday, the men also posted a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:18.41. The four member team consists of Engel, Michael Dibella (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), Thomas O'Connor (Westwood, Mass.) and Joseph Pugliano.
Other highlights from Friday night was O'Connor's 12th-place finish in the prelims of the men's 200 meter dash. O'Connor finished in a time of 22.14 seconds to just miss out on qualifying for the finals. Central Connecticut's Aaron Radden had the top time of the prelims of 21.61 while New Hampshire's William Brehim was the last to earn a qualifying spot in the finals at 21.99.
DiBella placed 15th in the 500 meters in 1:05.77
while Austin Huminski (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) placed
24th in the 1000 and Anthony Monteiro
(Leominster, Mass.) was 19th in the 55 hurdles
(8.03).
