LANDOVER, Md. - Competing in just their second Northeast Conference Championships, the Bryant University Indoor Track & Field teams have already proven they belong among the best in Division I. The Bryant women finished the meet ninth overall with 26 points, well ahead of last year's 11th-place finish, and conclude a tremendous NEC Championship weekend.
After an opening day Saturday that saw the Bulldogs qualify for numerous finals after outstanding performance during the prelims, Sunday's portion of the championships got off to a great start in favor of Bryant thanks a remarkable run by a freshman who has been there all along.
After an outstanding cross country season last fall, newcomer Deirdre Doyle (Carlow, Ireland) continues to carry the momentum into the indoor track season. Yesterday, Doyle closed the opening day by capturing the NEC title in the 3,000 meters, becoming Bryant's first individual champion at the conference meet.
Earlier in the day, she earned a spot in the finals of the women's mile by running the fastest time of the prelims in 5:12.19. Well on Sunday, the Bulldog freshman came through by winning the finals of the women's mile in an amazing time of 5:04.71.
Sacred Heart's Kim DeLoreto was second in 5:06.17. The win gives Bryant 20 points and a fourth-place position after six events scored.
In the latter part of Sunday's championships, Doyle helped lead the women's distance medley relay team of Megan Robertson (Sewell, N.J.), Sherika Nicholas (East Patchogue, N.Y.), and Kat Ragone (Bourne, Mass.) to a third place finish to earn six points. With Doyle running the anchor leg, the Bulldogs finished in a time of 12:34.74.
For her efforts, Doyle was named the Women's Most Outstanding Rookie of the Meet at the Championships.
