Second Half Defense Leads Bryant to Victory

SMITHFIELD, RI ? The Bryant University women?s basketball team used a strong defensive effort to beat Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption 75-71 in game played today at the Chace Athletic Center.

The first half saw Bryant (11-4, 6-4 NE-10) and Assumption (6-8, 2-7 NE-10) trade baskets to make the score 8-8 early on. Later in the half the Greyhounds would go on a 21-6 run to go up 37-17 with two minutes remaining. During the run Kerry Milhaven would score six points.

The Bulldogs would close out the half on 8-0 run to make the halftime 39-27. The half was closed out by an Emily Sauck (Scottsdale, AZ) three-pointer at the buzzer and an earlier lay-up.

The Bulldogs would start the second half on a 20-6 run by using an attacking full court press. Dede Fogarty (Middletown, Conn.) would hit a transition three-pointer along with a lay-up on the run. From there Bryant would go take a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining thanks to a Sauck lay-up. The Greyhounds would cut it to one with 52 seconds remaining but Bryant would sink their free-throws to take home the win.

Fogarty finished with a game-high 18 points and Lindsay Hermann (Bristol, Conn.) finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sauck chipped in with a career-high 12 points and four steals. Millhaven led Assumption with 13 points, and Charde Floyd had 12.

Bryant will return to action Monday, January 17, when the Bulldogs travel to American International for a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 5:30PM in Springfield, Mass.
