BRYANT WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO SOUTHERN NH IN TRIPLE OT
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sophomore Julie Kraus (Derry, NH) recorded just one point in the game, but it was a big one, as her free position goal with 49 seconds left in the sudden-victory third overtime lifted Southern New Hampshire University to a 15-14 victory over Bryant University here today in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action. SNHU, which is receiving votes in this week's Division II national poll, improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the league. The Bulldogs dropped to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the NE-10.
SNHU has won five-straight games, which ties the program record set during the 2005 season. The eight wins equals the program record set last year when the Penmen finished 8-5. It also marked SNHU's first win over Bryant, which had prevailed in each of he previous three meetings, including a 14-12 decision last year at Bryant.
Sophomores Libby Parent (Hinesburg, VT), Jennifer Parro (Ipswich, MA) and Maura Murphy (Candia, NH) all recorded six points today. Parent totaled five goals and one assist, and in the process became the first player in program history to record 100 points. She has now totaled exactly 100 points (69 gls, 31 asts) over the past two seasons. Murphy totaled three goals and three assists today, while Parro tied her own school-record for assists in a game (6). Freshman Carole Lee (Derry, NH) added three goals, including the game-tying goal with 26 seconds left in regulation, while fellow rookie Jami Shugrue (Lowell, MA) added two goals and one assist. Senior Shaun Leddy (Sea Girt, NJ) and junior Caitlin Hansen (Spring Lake, NJ) both totaled four goals and two assists for Bryant, while sophomore Delia Glover (Marston Mills, MA) added a team-high five goals.
Glover scored just 22 seconds into the game and Bryant later took a 4-0 lead following back-to-back goals by Hansen at 17:41 and 14:42. The Penmen got on the board following a goal by Parent with 11:25 left in the half, and SNHU got back-to-back goals by junior Lucretia Joy (Portland, ME) and Parent just 21 seconds apart to make it a 4-3 game at intermission.
The second half featured eight ties and neither team led by more than two goals. Bryant took a 6-4 lead following a goal by Glover three minutes into the second half, but the Penmen responded with three unanswered goals in the span of 4:32. Murphy's first goal of the game with 21:02 left capped the spurt and gave SNHU its first lead of the game, 7-6. Three unanswered goals by the Bulldogs later in the half gave the visitors a 12-10 lead. Leddy's unassisted goal with 8:43 left capped the run. Bryant took its final lead of the game, 14-13 following a goal by junior Lindsey Cann (Danvers, MA) with 55 seconds left, only to have Lee tie the game at 14-14 just 29 seconds later.
Neither team recorded a shot on goal during the first two overtime periods.
SNHU finished with a 34-24 edge in shots, and also posted a 19-14 edge in draw controls. Graduate student Lisa McEachern (Scituate, MA) made four saves for SNHU. Freshman Chelsea Pettingill (South Portland, ME) turned away several point-blank shots for Bryant and finished with 13 saves.
Both teams return to action Tuesday (4/24). SNHU hosts Merrimack College at 4 p.m., while Bryant travels to Saint Anselm College for a 4 p.m. tilt.
