MERRIMACK DEFEATS BRYANT 16-9 TO ADVANCE TO NE-10 SEMIFINALS SATURDAY
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Lauren Leddy (Sea Girt, NJ), Kathleen Esposito (Simsbury, CT) and Amanda Simeone (Nashua, NH) each scored three goals as fifth-seeded Merrimack defeated Bryant, 16-9 Wednesday in Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinal action here at the Bryant Turf Field. With the win, Merrimack will advance to the NE-10 semifinals Saturday where the fifth-seeded Warriors will face top-seed and Stonehill in Easton, Mass.
Bryant (9-6), which got a pair of goals from seniors Lauren Carlisle (San Diego, CA), Shaun Leddy (Sea Girt, NJ), and Amanda Gallant (Andover, Mass.) sees its season come to an end with a 9-6 record.
Merrimack (11-5) led 7-5 at the half, but Bryant managed to pull to within one on a goal from Gallant four minutes into the second half. Countering after a Merrimack crease violation, Ashley Ammendolia (Concord, Mass.) hit a cutting Gallant in the slot for a goal at the 26:31 mark.
But Merrimack would have an answer, rattling off three quick goals - two by Esposito to pull in front 10-6.
Lauren Albert (South Windsor, CT) would put a brief stop to the run with a free position goal at 15:48, but Merrimack would quickly put the game away as Basile scored back-to-back goals and the Warriors never looked back.
Merrimack out-shot Bryant 33 to 26 and got nine saves from
junior Amanda DiNitto (East Moriches, NY) to preserve the victory.
