Box Score

GREELEY, CO -  Freshman Kaitlyn Hinck (Bow, N.H.) scored the game winning goal in overtime as the Bryant University women's soccer team defeated the Northern Colorado Bears, 3-2, in its season opener on Friday night. It was the first Division 1 win for the program in its first game at that level.

After a scoreless first half, Northern Colorado (0-1-0) got the scoring started with the first of two goals coming from Sydney VanderVelde (Littleton, Colo.) in the 55th minute of play. Katey Borman (Corvallis, Oregon) delivered the free kick that found the head of VanderVelde in the box for the goal. VanderVelde struck again just five minutes later with a shot from the top of the box pushing the Bears lead to 2-0. But, the Bulldogs (1-0-0) would refuse to go away as freshman Brooke Duchaney (Hampton Falls, N.H.) got Bryant on the board in the 80th minute, stuffing the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick. Bryant wasted little time in tying the game when sophomore Sarah Donovan (Storrs, Conn.) touched the ball off to junior Alex DiPippo (Shelton, Conn.) in the 83rd minute off a free kick to tie the game at 2-2. The shot from DiPippo ricocheted off the post before finding its way past the goal line to beat Bear's goalkeeper Kirsten Salminen (Lynden, Wash.), ending regulation in a tie.

The Bulldogs were outshot 18-7 throughout the game including 2-1 in overtime, but Bryant made their one shot count as a pair of freshman came up with a clutch play late in the first half of overtime. Brooek Duchaney delivered a perfect cross finding fellow freshman Kaitlyn Hinck in the box who struck the ball from the left side and into the net to give Bryant a historic win, both for the program and for the school. Junior keeper Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.) made 8 stops in goal on her way to the victory playing all 105 minutes.

Bryant will travel to Wyoming on Sunday for a 1 p.m. (MT) match.
