FRIARS DEFEAT BULLDOGS, 3-1, AT PROVIDENCE THURSDAY
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Providence College Friars women's soccer team defeated the Bryant University Bulldogs Thursday in Providence, Rhode Island, 3-1. It was the season opener for the Friars, as they received a goal and an assist from sophomore Kate DelCiampo (Weathersfield) to help lift them to a victory and a 1-0 start to the season. The Bulldogs controlled much of the play in the second half, but were not able to finish a comeback.
The two teams played a very even first half, each with scoring chances through the first 30 minutes. The Friars came inches from a goal in the 23rd minute when Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) hit a half-volley shot from just inside the penalty box, but keeper Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.) was able to make a leaping save to punch the ball just over the net. Bryant had its own scoring chance in the 30th minute as a scramble in the box led to a shot from Holly Tyser (Somers, Conn.), but it was blocked by a Friar defender.
Providence struck with the first goal of the match in the
34th minute, as DelCiampo headed a ball nicely inside
the penalty box to Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) who rifled a ball
into the upper right hand corner to give the Friars a,1-0,
advantage. Miscommunication in the Bryant defense led to the
2nd goal, as DelCiampo stole an errant pass and finished
with her right foot just past the reach of Mitchell to push the
lead to 2-0. Bryant caught a break at the end of the half when a
Providence shot beat Mitchell but hit the post as the horn sounded
for halftime.
The game turned very physical in the second half, with 12 fouls
called in all (four on Bryant, eight on Providence). The Bulldogs
continued to battle and were able to get on the board in the second
half when a deflection at the top of the box came right to senior
captain Amy Orzechowski (Milford, Conn.) who was able to strike a
hard shot into the top right corner of the net, cutting the deficit
to 2-1 with just over 20 minutes to go in the game. Mitchell made
two great plays to keep Bryant in the game with a diving save with
13 minutes to go in the game, and then a sliding save to stop a
breakaway with 6:20 to go. However, the Friars would ice the game
in the 86th minute with a little help from the Bulldogs
as miscommunication between Danielle Malta (Bethel, Conn.) and
keeper Katie Mitchell led to an own goal when Malta passed the ball
back toward Mitchell who had come out of the net. Mitchell raced to
save the ball but could not stop it from trickling over the goal
line, making the final tally 3-1.
Bryant's next match will be Sunday, August 31st as
they travel to play George Washington (1 p.m.).
