AMHERST, MA - The UMass Minutewomen received goals from
Amy Ballew (Springfield, Va.)and Cristina Adams (Braintree, Mass.),
as they blanked the Bryant University Bulldogs, 2-0, to win
their first game of the season and hand the Bulldogs their fourth
straight loss. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Luckey (Hendersonville,
Tenn.) made four stops in net on her way to the shutout.
The Minutewomen got the scoring started early in the contest, when
last week's Atlantic-10 co-Player of the Week, Vanessa Patry
(Delmar, N.Y.), made a long run with the ball down the middle of
the field before finding Ballew on the right side for the goal in
the 6th minute of play. UMass would go on to outshoot
the Bulldogs, 8-4, in the first half, but were held to just the one
goal as the two teams headed to the locker rooms.
In the second half, Bryant remained down by one until the
76th minute when Adams stripped the ball from the
Bulldog defense and beat keeper Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.)
for her first goal of the season, and gave the Minutewomen a
comfortable 2-0 advantage. Mitchell made five stops in net for
Bryant. The Bulldogs stayed disciplined defensively, forcing nine
offsides calls on UMass, as well as winning the majority of corner
kicks, taking four compared to just one for the Minutewomen. Three
out of the four shots on goal for Bryant came from defenders as
Danielle Malta (Bethel, Conn.), Steph Del Mistro (East Williston,
N.Y.) and Molly Wallace (Sandwich, Mass.) each recorded a shot.
The Bulldogs will try to end their losing streak Saturday afternoon
when they travel to take on the University of Maine (1 p.m.).
