THREE SECOND HALF GOALS HELP HUSKIES GET PAST BULLDOGS, 3-1, SUNDAY
BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Veronica Napoli (Newport, R.I.) scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the second half to lift Northeastern (4-2-0) past Bryant, 3-1, in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon. The Huskies have now won four out of their last five games, while the Bulldogs are winless in their last seven.
Bryant (1-6-1) jumped out to a lead in the first half when freshman Kalie Whitehouse (Braintree, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the 36th minute of play to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Northeastern answered quickly to start the second half when team points leader Liza Rebello (New Bedford, Mass.) added to her scoring total when she delivered a pass to Napoli who beat keeper Jessica Clark (Barnstable, Mass.) to tie the game at 1-1 just four minutes into the second half. Later in the half, Napoli struck again on an unassisted goal that would prove to be the game-winner in the 76th minute, making the score 2-1. The Huskies would add an insurance goal just three minutes later as Leslie Condie (Kirkintilloch, Scotland) and Brenna Matthews (South Easton, Mass) combined to find Emilee Ellison (Peabody, Mass.) for her first of the season to stake Northeastern to a 3-1 lead, which is how the game would end.
Bryant was outshot nine to three in second half, and 11 to four in the game. Clark made four saves in net, while junior Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.), who played the majority of the first half in goal for the Bulldogs, made two stops.
The Bulldogs will take the field again Friday when they travel to Sacred Heart (7 p.m.).
