WOMEN'S SOCCER GEARS UP FOR FUTURE NEC RIVALS SACRED HEART, QUINNIPIAC THIS WEEKEND
SMITHFIELD, RI- Since winning their first game of the season, the Bryant University women's soccer team has gone seven straight games without a win. Last week, the Bulldogs had two tough losses, falling 2-1 at Stony Brook and 3-1 at Northeastern. Sophomore Sarah Donovan (Storrs, Conn.) scored the game-tying goal against Stony Brook in the 50th minute of play, but the Seawolves would grab the lead just five minutes later on their way to the victory. Against the Huskies, who are just outside the top-15 in the Northeast according to SoccerBuzz magazine, Bryant had a 1-0 lead at the half before relinquishing three second half goals, giving Northeastern the victory. This week, the Bulldogs will take on future NEC rivals when they travel to play Sacred Heart on Friday night and Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.
Scouting the Pioneers
The Sacred Heart University Pioneers (1-7-1) registered
their first win of the season last time out when they beat Albany,
2-1, on Sunday. The Pioneers dropped their first seven games of the
season, losing games to Maine, Army, Seton Hall, UMBC, Delaware,
Western Carolina and Yale, before earning a tie against Siena and
defeating Albany. This will be the first of only five home games
this season for Sacred Heart.
Leigh Dogmanits leads the way for Sacred Heart, having scored four of the team's six goals good for eight points on the year, including the game winner against Albany. Britney Dupee is second on the team in points, netting two goals and adding one assist. On the season, the Pioneers have been outscored 27-6 and outshot 147-93. Keeper Meghan Reichelt has played 840 minutes in net, stopping 47 shots while giving up 27 goals, recording a 2.89 goals against average.
Scouting the Bobcats
Quinnipiac dominated NJIT in their only game last week,
posting a 6-0 win. Freshman forward Furtuna Velaj was named
co-Brine/NEC Rookie of the Week, erupting for five goals against
NJIT. The ten points were the most all time for any Bobcat at the
Division I level. It also gave her more goals (5) than any
Quinnipiac player had all of last season.
The Bobcats enter this week with a 3-2-0 record, as they play two home games against Canisius, and then Sunday afternoon against Bryant. Prior to the 6-0 win, Quinnipiac had dropped two straight 1-0 games against Seton Hall and St. John's, who are ranked number four this week in the Northeast region. The game against Bryant will be the last non-conference game for the Bobcats, as they begin NEC play on October 3rd against Robert Morris.
Underclass Heroes
The Bulldogs have seen tremendous contributions from underclassmen
so far this season. Sophomore Sarah Donovan leads the team in
points with six, tallying two goals and two assists, including the
game-tying goal last week at Stony Brook. Freshmen Kaitlyn
Hinck (2g, 0a) and Brooke Duchaney
(Hampton Falls, N.H.) (1g, 2a) are tied for second
on the team with four points apiece along with junior Alex
DiPippo (Shelton, Conn.). Hinck (Bow, N.H.) scored
the game winning goal in the first overtime session against
Northern Colorado to give the Bulldogs a win in their Division I
debut. Freshman Kalie Whitehouse
(Braintree, Mass.) recorded her first career goal
in a loss at Northeastern. The underclassmen have accounted for 17
of the 25 total points thus far this season for the Bulldogs.
