BULLDOGS LOOK TO SNAP 3-GAME SKID, TAKE ON UMASS WEDNESDAY IN
AMHERST
SMITHFIELD, RI- After having nine days off since a 3-2 heartbreaking loss to George Washington, the Bryant University women's soccer team is back in action Wednesday afternoon when they take on the UMass Minutewomen in Amherst, Massachusetts. The Bulldogs (1-3-0) have dropped three straight games since winning their first game as a Division I program in thrilling fashion with a 3-2 overtime win at Northern Colorado. Since that time, Bryant has lost a pair of 3-1 decisions at Wyoming and at Providence, and suffered the 3-2 loss at George Washington. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Scouting the Minutewomen
This will be the second game of a three-game homestand for
UMass (0-1-2), as they are in search of their first victory of the
season. The Minutewomen have tied back-to-back games at Maine ,0-0,
and vs. New Hampshire, 2-2, after losing their season opener at
Binghamton, 2-1. All three of the team's games have gone into
overtime.
UMass is led by senior co-captain Vanessa Patry (Delmar, N.Y.), who
was named Atlantic-10 co-Player of the Week. Patry had a career
day, scoring both goals in a 2-2 tie in the team's home opener
against New Hampshire. She leads the team with four points, and has
scored two out of the team's three goals so far this season.
Senior Tina Rodriguez (Whitestone, N.Y.) has the only other
score.
The Minutewomen finished the 2007 campaign with a final record of
9-6-2, 4-6-1 in the Atlantic-10. The squad got off to a fast start,
going 6-0-1 to start the season, including going undefeated (5-0-1)
in non-conference play. Hampered by injuries, UMass struggled in
conference play, but still had a chance to qualify for the A-10
tournament up until the second-to-last weekend of the season.
Underclass Heroes
The Bulldogs have seen tremendous contributions from underclassmen
so far this season. Freshmen Kaitlyn Hinck (2g, 0a) and Brooke
Duchaney (1g, 2a) are tied for the team lead with four points
apiece along with junior Alex DiPippo (Shelton, Conn.). Hinck
(Bow, N.H.) scored the game winning goal in the first overtime
session against Northern Colorado to give the Bulldogs a win in
their Division I debut. Sophomore Sarah Donovan (Storrs, Conn.) has
been excellent in the midfield, dishing out two assists.
Shooting Gallery
Through their first four games, Bryant has been outshot 55-34 by
their opponents including 32-13 in the first half. However, the
Bulldogs have only been outscored 11-7 overall, and have had a
better shots-on-goal percentage (53%) and save percentage (62%)
than their opponents.
Bulldogs Travel to Maine on Saturday
After facing off against the Minutewomen, Bryant will travel to
Orono, Maine to take on the undefeated University of Maine
Blackbears on Saturday. Maine (2-0-3) has had wins vs. Sacred
Heart, 3-0, and versus Iona, 1-0 sandwiched between three ties
against UMass, Rhode Island, and Temple. The Blackbears are led by
Laura Martel, who has three of the team's seven goals on the
season. Stellar defense has helped the squad to their undefeated
mark, allowing just three goals through five games, good for a 0.49
goals against average.
