SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After scoring back-to-back goals over the weekend, including the game-winner against George Washington University on Sept. 11, Bryant University women's soccer freshman forward Suzanne Sanders (West Chester, Pa.) was named the adidas/NEC Rookie of the Week.
It is the second time Sanders has garnered the rookie of the week honor in 2011. The freshman recorded her first collegiate goal in Bryant's 5-2 setback against host Navy on Friday, Sept. 9, in the opening round of the Navy Invitational. The forward followed that up by scoring the only goal in Sunday afternoon's game against the Colonials. Sanders took a pass from junior midfielder Alex Bengston (Andover, Mass.) and ripped it home, putting the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 28th minute, garnering her fifth career point in the process. That lone strike would account for the game's only scoring, as Bryant would hold on for a 1-0 victory, moving to 3-2-1 on the season. She also went on to be named to the Navy Invitational All-Tournament team.
Bryant will return to action on Wednesday night, taking on Holy Cross in a non-league meeting in Worcester, Mass. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
