MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING RECORD FIRST DIVISION I VICTORY IN TRI-MEET SATURDAY AFTERNOON
FAIRFIELD, CONN.- The Bryant University men's and women's swim teams each defeated Manhattan College in a tri-meet Saturday afternoon that also featured Fairfield University. The men won by a final tally of 166-29 while the women finished with a score of 135-67.
Both squads lost to Fairfield, the women falling 151-72, but the men lost by a score of just 123-108. The Stags were only able to beat the Bulldogs by picking up 28 points in diving, an event that Bryant does not compete in, as the Bulldog men out-swam Fairfield on the day.
An outstanding performance by Tom Ferrigno (West Chester, Pa.) helped key the Bryant men to a victory over the Jaspers of Manhattan as he took down first place in three different events, winning the 800 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke.
Sophomore Steven Nguyen (San Jose, Calif.) grabbed two first place finishes on the day in the 200 and 400 freestyles. Freshmen Matt Derwin (Cheshire, Conn.) and Zach Bowen (Linchefield, N.H.) had a big one, three finish respectively in the 200 butterfly.
Mike Gilligan (Cheshire, Conn.) also had a first place finish in the 100 freestyle, and contributed to a huge win in the 200 freestyle relay that also featured three freshmen in Bowen, Hayden Osborn (Waterbury, Conn.) and Kevin McDonald (North Haven, Conn.).
On the women's side, Jess Looney (Goffstown, N.H.) took first in the 800 and 400 freestyle events while coming in second in the 200 back to help the Bulldog women beat the Jaspers. Jill Hira (Cheshire, Conn.) also had a great day in the pool, as she won first place in the 200 freestyle while coming in third in the 400 freestyle.
Amy D'Olympia (Mattapoisett, Mass.) came in third in both to 50 and 100 freestyle events to help contribute to the victory.
Bryant will next swim in the URI invitational December 5th and 6th.
