Solomon Drops Opening Match At ITA Tennis Championship Thursday
October 14, 2004
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Bryant University sophomore SACHA SOLOMON (Bourne, Mass.) dropped an opening round decision to Diana Gherghi of Columbus State 6-1, 6-0 Thursday morning at the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championship, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in partnership with the Lee County Sports Authority.
Solomon, the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman and Player of the Year in 2004, captured the ITA East Regional Championship back in September, posting a 5-0 record to advance to this week’s national finals. She will face either Victoria Weltz of Lynn University or Annika Biro of Valdosta State on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
The ITA National Small College Championships, presented by the United States Tennis Association, began in 1985 and annually crowns men's and women's singles and doubles national champions in each of the ITA's four small college divisions - NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College. Participants were determined through the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships, held the past three weeks, which serve as qualifying tournaments where the singles and doubles champions advance to Fort Myers.
At the ITA National Small College Championships each division (men's and women's singles and doubles) consists of the eight champions from regional tournaments, from which a national (divisional) champion is determined during the first two-and-a-half days of competition. These national champions from each division square off in the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis (during the weekend) to determine the overall ITA National Small College Champions, who then earn berths into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, a Division I event in November.
Matches start at 8 a.m. Thursday-Saturday, will run throughout the day and conclude at approx. 6:30 p.m. each day. On Saturday afternoon the Super Bowl begins with semifinals starting at 2 p.m. Sunday's Super Bowl singles finals start at 10:30 a.m., followed by doubles at 1 p.m.
163 student-athletes from 71 colleges and universities will be participating this week. Draws for all divisions are currently available on the ITA website at www.itatennis.com/fgcu.htm
