Women's tennis falls in home opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team fell to Providence College, 6-1, in their home opener Wednesday afternoon.

Despite being plagued by injury, the Bulldogs battled with the Friars in multiple competitive sets, but in the end, the talented Providence newcomers proved to be too much.

Senior Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) earned the lone point for the Black and Gold, defeating Karen Ramirez in the sixth singles position, 6-4, 6-3. Last season, Bird competed at the number two, four, five and six singles positions throughout the year.

In doubles action, the pairing of Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) and Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) defeated Hannah Zangari and Karen Ramirez, 8-7, in the number two position. This is the second victory of the season for the duo after winning their opening round match at the Stony Brook Invitational.

Looking forward, the Bulldogs next action will be on Sunday, Sept. 23 when they host the Bryant Invitational.
