Bulldogs win big over weekend
WOMEN'S TENNIS TOPS HARTFORD AND MONMOUTH, 7-0, OVER THE WEEKEND
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Over the weekend, Bryant University women's tennis dominated on the court, winning two dual matches in convincing fashion, defeating both Hartford and Monmouth 7-0, to improve to 4-1 on the year.
On Friday, the Bulldogs travled to West Hartford, Conn., for their first road match of the season. Bryant defeated the the short-handed Hawks, 7-0, with impressive performances across the board.
Junior Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) competed at the number one singles position for the first time this year, defeating Ashley Harel in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) defeated Hannah Goldman, 6-1, 6-0, in the fourth singles spot to improve to 5-0 in dual matches on the year.
In doubles action, Bird and Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated Harel/Goldman, 8-2, and the duo of Brandao and Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) topped Katina Zampas and Colleen Beck, 8-4. Brandao and Ammendola remain unbeaten as a team in dual matches this season.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs hosted Monmouth to open Northeast Conference play.
It was senior day for Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and fittingly enough, she ended her dual match record with a win at number one singles, defeating Nicole Lippens, 6-2, 6-0.
The toughest matches of the day came at the number two and three singles positions. In the number two spot, Brandao fought off a late push from Brook Verdiglione to win, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). In the number three position, Smyers defeated Ashley Sandler, 6-3, 7-5.
"Both Smyers and Brandao had to dig deep to stay as consistent as possible," said Bryant head coach Barbara Cilli. "Some great serving at clutch moments helped to pull out their matches, both by a close margin."
The Bulldogs will host the New England Championships over the weekend as they look to continue their strong play.
