SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite a huge win at no. 1 singles from freshman Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif.), the Bryant University women's tennis team fell to a very talented UMass Amherst team, 6-1, Saturday afternoon.

Prior to Saturday's match, the Bulldogs had never previously earned a single point from the Minutewomen, let alone at no. 1 singles. At the number one spot, Bouillin got off to slow start against Yuliana Motyl with some unforced errors, resulting in a 6-7(7-2) first set loss. In the second set, the freshman regained her timing and excelled in her returns, taking it 6-2, before picking up a huge third set tiebreaker, 12-10.

However, the rest of the Bulldogs struggled to gain any type of traction against a very good UMass team, resulting in a 6-1 Minutewomen victory.

"As to be expected, we got off to a bit of a slow start our first time out this spring", said Bryant head coach Barbara Cilli. "That set us back in doubles, especially with new format there's no time to be rusty."

"Once we got going, singles showed more promise. This was probably our best showing vs. UMass in a long time. Had we hit them a month later, I think we would have seen some better scores. But, it was good to start against such a strong team because it really showed us where we were weak."

Bryant will have a week to prepare for its next match vs. Hofstra as part of a Bulldog Tennis doubleheader with the men's team at Rally Point on Saturday evening (6:30 p.m.).
