Volleyball Wins Second Straight Conference Title Saturday Night
November 13, 2004
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Michelle Muniz recorded a career-high 30 kills and freshman standout Jessica Henson (Bedford, TX) added a career-high 20 kills as the Bryant women’s volleyball team captured its second-consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title and third conference championship in the program’s history as the Bulldogs rallied from a two games to one deficit to defeat Bentley 3-2 here Saturday night.
Bryant won the first game 30-28 only to see Bentley storm back to win the next two 30-25, 30-26. Trailing 15-12 midway through the fourth game, the Bulldogs dug deep and would not be denied capturing back-to-back titles on this night.
Bryant, entering the match winners of 54-straight games against Northeast-10 Conference opponents, stormed back to take a 16-15 lead on a Muniz kill down the left side. With junior Lindsay Klix (Rochester Hills, MI) serving, the Bulldogs rattled off 10-straight points to race out in front 22-15 and quickly turned the momentum back on the side of the defending champions. The Bulldogs would close out the match with an 18-6 run to win 30-21 and force the deciding fifth game.
In the fifth, it was all Bryant as Bentley had no answer for Muniz on the outside. The Northeast-10 Player of the Year opened the game with three-straight kills as Bryant built a 6-2 lead early. With Muniz drawing the attention of the Bentley middles, that just opened the door for Henson to keep the offense rolling as the NE-10 Freshman of the Year helped stave off any chance of a comeback from Bentley with two hard kills down the middle as the Bulldogs won 15-6 to claim the title.
With the win, Bryant (34-5) will automatically advance to the NCAA tournament for the sixth-consecutive year and will await the announcement of the bracket late Sunday night and begin at the end of next week.
In the semifinal match earlier, the Bulldogs rolled to a 3-0 win over Saint Rose as Michelle Muniz (Guaynabo, P.R.) led the way with 12 kills and 15 digs. Game scores were 30-22, 30-23, 30-26. Jessica Henson (Bedford, TX) and Lindsay Klix (Rochester Hills, MI) each had 10 kills in the match while senior Carola Pierluisi (Guaynabo, P.R.) had 18 digs defensively. The Bulldogs served well with eight services aces in the match and had just two reception errors as Tiffany Garry (Frankfort, Ill.) had 39 assists and two of Bryant’s services aces in the match.
