Volleyball Defeats UMass Lowell 3-0 Tuesday

LOWELL, MA (Oct. 12, 2004) ? Junior OH Michelle Muniz (Guayanabo, PR) registered 21 kills and 16 digs as Bryant University defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-16) Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference volleyball clash of unbeaten teams at Costello Gym.

The loss halted a five-match win skein for UML (11-4 overall, 8-1 in the NE-10), which suffered its first Conference loss of the year. The setback was also the River Hawks? first in league play since Oct. 15, 2002, halting a 15-game winning streak.

Bryant, the last team to defeat UML at home, enjoyed its fifth straight victory and 11th in the last 12 matches. The Bulldogs improved to 22-3 overall and 10-0 in the NE-10.

Freshman OH Jessica Henson (Bedford, TX) registered 13 kills and 17 digs for Bryant while senior libero Carola Pierluisi (Guayanabo, PR) compiled 20 digs. Freshman S Tiffany Garry (Frankfurt, IL) dished out 39 assists in addition to 10 digs.

Junior OH Julie Handy (Yorba Linda, CA) had nine kills, 14 digs and six blocks while senior OH Ashley Cote (Lowell, MA) added six kills and 14 digs for UML. Senior MH Lauren Dufresne (Chelmsford, MA) also added six kills while junior UT Katie Harrington (Rochester, NH) and freshman OH Kristina Martell (Chelmsford, MA) each had 12 digs.

Muniz moved into second all-time for career kills with 1,498, passing former standout Meribah Dean. Maria Bras is the all-time kills leader with 2,045.

Pierluisi, Bryant's lone senior, inched closer to Marcie Monaco for second all-time in career digs with 1,752. She is just 12 digs back of Monaco's 1,764.
