BRYANT VOLLEYBALL PICKED SIXTH IN NORTHEAST CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL
SMITHFIELD, RI- After only one year of Division I play in 2008, the Bryant University volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the Northeast Conference, as voted on by league coaches. The poll was announced Monday afternoon by conference officials.
Theresa Garlacy enters her 14th season as head coach of the Bulldogs and despite the loss of key contributors, the Bulldogs bring five newcomers into a system already filled with talent.
Looking to lead the way is senior captain Julie Geonnotti (St. Louis Park, Minn.). The only player in the NEC and the first in the program since 1997 to record a triple-double, Geonnotti will look to move back to outside hitter while continuing to fill in at setter in 2008. Junior co-captain Adrienne Boss (Dracut, Mass.) and sophomore Maria Scocca (Melrose, Mass.) return as Bryant's top offensive threats while Robyn Gardner (Longwood, Fla.) will step into the shoes of graduated libero Delia Glover. Adding to the Bulldogs' arsenal is scrappy sophomore Jazmin Stoner (Durango, Colo.).
Bryant will play a full conference schedule in 2009 including 15 home matches in its second year of transition to the DI level.
The NEC coaches selected Long Island and Robert Morris to share the top spot in the league's preseason poll, as LIU aims for its sixth consecutive league crown in 2009. Central Connecticut, Sacred Heart and Saint Francis (PA) round out the top five just one slot ahead of the Bulldogs. Farleigh Dickinson, Quinnipiac and St. Francis (NY) close the preseason field, respectively.
The Bulldogs open up the second year of their Division I transition Friday, Aug. 28 at Toledo University and open up their home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. when they host Holy Cross.
