SCOCCA EARNS SECOND-STRAIGHT WEEKLY HONOR, NAMED DI ALL-INDEPENDENT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Bryant University volleyball all-star Maria Scocca (Melrose, Mass.) continued her trend of strong play and being recognized for it, earning her second-straight Division I All-Independent weekly honor, this time as the Defensive Player of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon.
After being named the season's first Player of the Week on Sept. 7, Scocca took her offense and added in a shot of stellar defense in Week Two, collecting 15 total blocks and 30 kills in a 1-1 week for the Bulldogs.
A sophomore middle blocker, Scocca is showing no signs of a second-year slump, as she averaged 1.88 blocks and 3.75 kills per set, leading the Bulldogs to a marquee win over intrastate rival Brown, 3-1, on Thursday night.
In the win, Scocca set a pair of single-match program records with her impressive 15 blocks and 14 block assists, also recording a game-best 16 kills in the contest. For the week, the Massachusetts native hit at a .319 clip and recorded a pair of aces for 40 points in two matches.
Scocca and the Bulldogs go back to work Tuesday night, as they host the America East's University of New Hampshire at the Chace Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
