BULLDOGS VOLLEYBALL RETURNS HOME TO HOST UNH TUESDAY AT 7 P.M.

Live Stats

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The Bryant University volleyball team returns to the Chace Athletic Center Tuesday night to host the University of New Hampshire at 7 p.m.

Bryant (2-6) will be looking to make things right with its home fans after suffering a loss the last time out in its 2009 home opener. The Wildcats (2-7) come to the Chace Athletic Center with a 2-7 record, having played and beaten just one common opponent as the Bulldogs - an identical 3-1 win over Brown University.

NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP FOR SCOCCA
The Melrose, Mass. native who led the team in kills (343), points (447.5) and blocks (127) last year as a freshman is showing no signs of slowing down in her second season. Just eight games into the 2009 campaign, sophomore Maria Scocca has already set three new career highs, two of them good for single-season program records. She has earned an all-tournament team nomination and now, in just the third week of competition, has added consecutive honors from the Division I All-Independent weekly awards. Last week, the middle hitter was named the season's first All-Independent Player of the Week. This week, as announced on Monday, Scocca earned her first All-Independent Defensive Player of the Week accolade, averaging 1.88 blocks per set in Bryant's two-match week. The sophomore was particularly impressive in the Bulldogs' 3-1 win over Brown where she set two new program records, collecting 14 block assists (previous record - 10) and 15 total blocks (previous record - 13) while also registering 16 kills.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Freshman Macy Mitravich set Bryant University athletics history Monday afternoon, when the Northeast Conference announced her as the recipient of the Volleyball Rookie of the Week award. The award is the first conference honor not just for Mitravich or the Bulldog volleyball program, but for Bryant University as a whole, having just become eligible for the weekly recognition in the fall of 2009.

The Hawaii native had a standout week, recording 17 kills and 27 digs on a 1-1 week. She collected eight kills and 11 digs while staying perfect on 15 serve attempts (one ace) in Bryant's 3-1 loss to Holy Cross Wednesday night, following that up with a crucial nine-kill, 16-dig outing the very next night in the Bulldogs' marquee 3-1 win over Brown. Against the Bears, the rookie hit at a .261 clip with an ace and four blocks to help lead the Bulldogs to the much-needed victory. On the week, the outside hitter boasted a .957 reception percentage, committing just two errors on 46 total attempts and was perfect on service attempts, getting two aces and no errors in 29 serves. She also averaged 3.38 digs per set.

LAST TIME OUT
The Bulldogs earned their second win of the season, and it was a big one in the form of a 3-1 victory over intrastate rival Brown Thursday night. Maria Scocca paced the game with 16 kills and 15 blocks while junior libero Robyn Gardner recorded an impressive 30 digs over the four-set match. Seniors Adriana Fuertes and Julie Geonnotti split the setting duties, dishing out 21 and 18 assists, respectively.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs head to New York City to compete in the Columbia Tournament. They will face off against the hosts on Friday, Spet. 18 (7 p.m.) before a Saturday doubleheader against Lehigh (1:30 p.m.) and NEC opponent Fairleigh Dickinson (4:30 p.m.).
