SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- After a 63-kill, 18-block week, Bryant University volleyball phenom Maria Scocca (Melrose, Mass.) was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
The sophomore earns her first NEC weekly honor after four stellar performances for the Bulldogs on a 1-3 week, leading Bryant (3-9) in kills in three of its four contests and scoring double-digit kill totals in a trio of matches.
Scocca recorded 20 or more kills twice on the week, getting 23 against Columbia and 20 in a win over conference opponent Fairleigh Dickinson. The Massachusetts native hit at an above .400 in back-to-back weekend matches, boasting a .474 attack percentage against Columbia and .409 clip against Lehigh. The middle hitter also led the team defensively, collecting 18 total blocks (3 solo, 15 assist).
Scocca hit at a .362 clip in four matches and averaged 3.71 kills per set. In the weekend's Columbia Tournament alone, Scocca amassed 55 kills (4.23/set) and 13 blocks, earning the phenom her second all-tournament team selection of the season. The sophomore also averaged an impressive 4.56 points per set on the week.
The selection makes back-to-back weekly honors for the Bulldog volleyball program, as freshman Macy Mitravich (Waimanalo, Hawaii) was named Rookie of the Week on Sept. 14.
