SCOCCA, GARDNER SWEEP DI INDEPENDENT WEEKLY AWARDS, NAMED PLAYER AND DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The Bryant University volleyball team swept the Division I All-Independent weekly awards Monday afternoon, as sophomore Maria Scocca (Melrose, Mass.) and junior Robyn Gardner (Longwood, Fla.) were named Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Scocca passed the 200-kill mark on the season at the conclusion of the Bulldogs' 2-2 week, collecting 54 kills to compliment a team-best 24 blocks (5 solo, 19 assists). The sophomore middle blocker averaged 3.6 kills per set, 1.6 blocks per set and 4.7 points per set on the week, recording a double-double (18 kills, 11 blocks) in a 3-2 win over Brown Saturday.
Scocca excelled in the weekend Bryant Invitational, leading the Bulldogs to a 2-1 tournament record with a 42-kill, 22-block performance that earned the sophomore her third all-tournament team selection of the season.
She recorded double-digit kills in three of Bryant's four contests, posting match highs twice. Scocca led the team in the week's first game, a 3-1 loss to Hartford, where she registered 12 kills and a .526 hitting percentage. On the week, she posted a .395 attack percentage with two aces and 13 digs.
Gardner's Defensive Player of the Week honor was also well earned, as the junior libero recorded 86 digs (5.73 digs/set), including a career-high 33 in a 3-0 win over Coppin State Sunday, to pace Bryant defensively. She made just seven reception errors on 148 total attempts in four matches for an impressive .953 reception percentage, and closed out the week with four kills and a team-best five aces.
This is the third all-Independent weekly honor for Scocca and the first for Gardner.
