Ted Garlacy enters his 18th year as assistant volleyball coach at Bryant University, and a program would be hard-pressed to find a coach more devoted.
Assisting his wife, head coach Theresa Garlacy, Ted plays a key role in all aspects of the Bulldog program, from recruiting and scouting to coordinating practice sessions, match administration and strength & conditioning.
Together, the two are the perfect combination, a duo that has turned the Bryant program into one of the top volleyball programs in the region. The team's most recent results could not be more indicative of that success, as the Bulldogs set a program-record with 18 victories at the D-I level during the 2010 campaign, despite fielding a roster decimated by injuries to key players.
Since Garlacy came to Bryant in 1994, the Bulldogs have made 11 NCAA appearances, winning 20 or more matches in a season 10 times and topping the 30-win plateau on four occasions.
Garlacy has been instrumental in the Bulldogs' move up to the Division I ranks as well as to the success the team has seen at the highest level of NCAA competition. In two seasons, the Black and Gold have posted 45 victories over DI opponents from an array of top-tier conferences, and 19 of those wins have come over Northeast Conference foes.
Garlacy also saw the program's first Division I postseason honors come in 2009, the team's season year of DI action, when then-sophomore Maria Scocca led the conference in blocks, earning an All-NEC Second Team selection while also garnering All-Independent Player of the Year accolades. Libero Robyn Gardner was also recognized with an All-Independent Second Team nod while a quartet of Bulldogs earned academic distinctions from both the All-Independent committee and the Northeast Conference.
In 2010, Garlacy took on another role within the Bryant Athletic Department, signing on as Director of Marketing and Promotions in addition to his coaching duties.
During his years in Smithfield, Garlacy has also spent three seasons as an assistant coach and two years as head coach of the North Smithfield High School volleyball team, as well as serving as the head coach of the Brown men's club volleyball team.
A 1991 graduate of Roger Williams University, Garlacy is a retired sergeant from the North Smithfield police department. He coordinates many of the Bulldogs' community service efforts throughout the year and is a longtime volunteer with the Special Olympics. Garlacy received a master's degree from Bryant in May 2007.
