SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University men’s basketball redshirt-senior Byron Hawkins (Fort Washington, Md.) and women’s basketball junior Sydney Holloway (Morgantown, W.Va.) have been selected as the Navigant Credit Union Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Nov. 11.
Hawkins led Bryant in scoring in each of the Bulldogs’ first two games of the season, scoring 16 in his Bryant debut Tuesday at Rhode Island and 19 Sunday at Seattle. The guard from Maryland made 11 free throws over the course of the week, the second-highest total in the NEC. Hawkins’ 17.5 points per game in the season’s opening week place him eighth in the conference.
Holloway put up 22.5 points and 16.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for Bryant with victories over UMass Lowell and Brown. In the season opener in Lowell, Holloway stole the ball off of an inbound play with under 10 seconds to go in the game with the score tied 57-57. As she stole the ball, she was fouled attempting a layup and knocked down a free throw to help the Bulldogs win the game 58-57. Two days later, Holloway posted 27 points and 20 rebounds to help Bryant beat Brown 75-57.
