SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University men’s swimming & diving graduate student Micah Ornelas (San Diego, Calif.) and women’s swimming & diving senior Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) have been selected as the Navigant Credit Union Athletes of the Week.
Ornelas was named Swimmer of the Meet at the MAAC Championships over the weekend, becoming the first Bulldog since 2015 to achieve the feat. The graduate student from San Diego set three meet records and collected three NCAA “B” cuts, winning gold in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM. Ornelas added silver medals in the 200 free and 400 free along with relay gold medals in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. The Bulldogs finished second at the MAAC Championships, good for Bryant’s best-ever finish at the meet.
Rice helped lead Bryant to its second consecutive NEC Championship last weekend, earning the Bulldogs’ first Swimmer of the Meet honor since 2013. The senior from Connecticut won gold in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free along with four relay gold medals (200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 200 medley.) Rice bested her performance of six gold medals (two individual and four relay) in 2018.
