NEC HONORS RINN AS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After helping the Bryant University baseball team to a series victory over Monmouth with his bat and his glove, freshman first baseman Robby Rinn (Warwick, R.I.) was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Rinn, who has now won the honor each of the last two weeks, hit .462 (6-for-13) with two RBI and two runs scored. Defensively, he handled 54 chances without committing an error. He collected a hit in each of the four games with the Hawks, extending his career-long hitting streak to 10 games. In game one of Saturday's doubleheader he had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run but his biggest contribution came in the field. With Bryant leading 1-0 and the bases loaded for Monmouth, Rinn back handed a ground ball and threw home for the second out of the inning. On the next play, he made an excellent scoop of a throw in the dirt to retire the runner and end the inning. Rinn also found himself in the middle of Saturday's walk-off victory in game two. He singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and came around to score the game-winning run two batters later on a Jordan Mountford (Guelph, Ont.) walk-off single. Rinn capped his weekend with two hits and an RBI in Sunday's series finale. During his current 10-game hitting streak, Rinn is hitting .438 (14-for-32) with 10 RBI, raising his season average to a season-high .294.
The Bulldogs are back in action this week as they wrap up NEC play in Staten Island against Wagner. Game one is scheduled for Thursday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m.
