SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team returns to Durham, N.C., for the first time since 1983 when it visits Duke on Wednesday at Jack Coombs Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Bryand and Duke will be meeting for the second time in program history. The Blue Devils beat the Bulldogs, 13-6, on March 16, 1983.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke is off to one of its best starts in program history and recently had a nine-game winning streak snapped by North Carolina. The Blue Devils are 12-3 after a commanding 13-3 win over Yale on Tuesday. Duke took two-of-three from Cal and has also earned a 3-2 victory over Liberty.
The Blue Devils are hitting .268 as a team and are scoring exactly six runs a game. Mike Rosenfeld leads the team with a .370 average, five doubles, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. Cris Perez has driven in a team-high 16 runs with just 13 hits and Justin Bellinger (12) and Kenny Koplove (10) each have double-digit RBI. Andy Perez has scored 11 runs and already stolen 14 bases.
On the mound, Duke has posted a 2.32 ERA in the first 15 games of the season. The Blue Devils have walked just 46 and struck out 130 in 136 innings. Opponents are hitting .231 against Duke. Wednesday's starter Ryan Day will be making his second start of the season. The rookie made his first career start last week against Liberty, tossing a scoreless inning.
FABIO HITS STRIDE AT TOWSON
Cole Fabio hit his stride at Towson and is now Bryant's leading hitter. Starting with the Tigers, Fabio is now hitting .571 (8-14) with two RBI and seven runs scored over his last four games. He had a pair of three hit games against Towson and went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple at Old Dominion.
ZAROZNY PRODUCING RUNS
AJ Zarozny has been an RBI machine his last four games, picking up seven against Towson and Old Dominion. He has now had a hit and driven in a run in each of the last four contests. He tripled, scored and drove in a run on Tuesday at Old Dominion.
ZAROZNY, MOUNTFORD GO BACK-TO-BACK
Zarozny and Jordan Mountford capped a big offensive weekend for the Bulldogs with back-to-back home runs in the series finale at Towson. Zarozny hit a 2-2 pitch for a home run and Mountford swatted the very next pitch over the fence for his second home run of the season.
MOUNTFORD HOMERS AGAIN
Mountford hit his second home run in as many games on Tuesday at Old Dominion, a two-run blast in the third inning. It was his third home run of the season and marked the second time in his career he has homered in back-to-back games.
Wednesday's game with Duke will be a family affair for the Haywards. For the first and only time, brothers Nolan (Bryant) and Garrett (Duke) will be able to play against each other. Garrett is the second oldest in the family and is a senior at Duke, while Nolan is the youngest and a freshman at Bryant.
