Bulldogs and Blue Devils split Saturday's NEC doubleheader

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team opened Saturday's NEC doubleheader with a 3-2 edge over Central Connecticut, before falling in game two, 4-1, in New Britain.

GAME ONE

The Bulldogs (6-25, 1-4 NEC) captured game one of the doubleheader, 3-2, over the Blue Devils (5-16, 1-2), capturing the victory in the top of the sixth. With two outs, junior Rachel Monroe (Southwick, Mass.) tripled to right center, marking her first of the season. Freshman Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) brought the captain in for the game-winning run off a RBI single to center field.

The Black and Gold took the initial 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, senior Haylee Haas (Moorpark, Calif.) was hit by a pitch from Emily Sargent, allowing junior Robyn Ukegawa (Carlsbad, Calif.) to score the go-ahead run.

The Bulldogs pushed the margin to two in the following inning, after freshman Marianna Politis (Arcadia, Calif.) hit her first-career homer.

In the bottom of the frame, the Blue Devils evened the score, 2-2. With no outs and runners on first and third, Kerri Dadalski doubled to right center, scoring Brittany Camara unearned. With one out and runners on second and third, Kaitlin Paterson singled through the left side to, plating the tying score, 2-2.

The Bulldogs went on to win the game in the top of the sixth after Ermish drove Monroe in for the 3-2 edge. The Blue Devils went down in order in the final two innings.

Monroe finished 3-for-3, while the Bulldogs totaled eight hits. CCSU tallied six hits, while Dadalski and Paterson both went 2-for-3.

Ermish earned the win in the circle, throwing three strikeouts in seven innings. Sargent moved to 5-12 on the season, fanning six batters, while allowing three runs off eight hits.

GAME TWO

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the Bulldogs (6-26, 2-4 NEC) allowed the Blue Devils (6-16, 1-3) a four-run third inning, as CCSU hung on to win, 4-1, in game two of the Saturday doubleheader.

With one out and the bases loaded, Ermish singled down the leftfield line, plating senior Taylor Burger (Killingworth, Conn.) from third to give Bryant a 1-0 edge.

The Blue Devils responded back with an explosive third inning, scoring four runs off four hits. Alexis Debrosse loaded the bases off a bunt, before Camara knocked the two RBI single through the right side, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead. Brittany McNulla followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Debrosse from third. Edwards finalized the 4-1 CCSU win with a RBI single.

The Bulldogs went down in order in three of the final four innings as the Blue Devils took game two of the doubleheader, 4-1.

The Black and Gold totaled four hits from four different players, while CCSU finished with nine hits, as Edwards went 2-for-2.

Alex Casanas recorded her first win of the season on the mound, allowing one run off four hits, while fanning two batters. Sophomores Brandi Burgin (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) split time in the circle, but Burgin recorded the loss, after allowing four runs off four points in three innings.
